Green Practices
Joining GreenPlumbers® has provided PlumbSmart Technologies with the opportunity to provide environmentally friendly plumbing. GreenPlumbers' goal is to train plumbers on the technologies and techniques that limit water and energy waste. The training consists of a five-part accreditation in environmental and technical issues.
Why is that important for customers?
PlumbSmart Technolgoies encourages our customers to install the latest in water saving fixtures.
What can I do to save water?
Water and energy reducing ideas:
- Fit faucets and shower heads with water restricting aerators or use new high-efficiency fixtures
- Replace toilets with more water efficient models
- Use water conserving landscape irrigation
- Install a tankless water heater
- On-demand water pumps can reduce the wait for hot water, while reducing water usage
- Consider solar water heating systems
- Ask us about a water audit of your home
Water is one of our most valuable resources and we all can help in its conservation.
In addition to helping our customers go green, as a company we are dedicated to making smart choices in our office, in the field, and in our personal homes. From using high efficiency faucets at home to recycling any excess plastic and metal materials from the field, PlumbSmart Technologies takes a whole picture approach to conserving resources.
Below you will find a brief description of some of the green plumbing techniques and technologies that are available. Please contact us for more information or to set up a consultation.
Grey Water Systems
Grey water is any waste water generated in the home, except from toilets. Dish, shower, sink and laundry water comprise 50-80% of residential "wastewater". Grey water can be saved, filtered, and used for flushing toilets. Please ask us about the installation of a grey water system in your existing home or business.
On Demand Water Heaters
We install on demand water heaters that save enormous amounts of energy and water while taking up a small amount of space. Rather than constantly heating a large tank full of water, an on demand heater instantly heats only the water you're using at the moment you need it. On demand water heaters also eliminate the possibility of running out of hot water. You can learn more about the advantages of tankless water heaters and how they work here. We are certified dealers and installers of Rinnai on demand water heaters. The other brands that we service and install are: Rheem, Noritz, Navian, Bosch and Takagi. We can match a manufacturer to your application.
Rain Water Harvesting and Distribution
There are many good reasons for harvesting rain water. First and foremost, it's free! Rain water is a precious resource that we can use to reduce the amount of potable water we use to flush our toilets and irrigate our land. By harvesting rain water we also reduce pollution from storm water run-off, erosion, and lower the amount of treatment needed at local utility facilities. Use of rain water also reduces the demand of energy necessary to bring processed water from our reservoirs and streams.
Pipe, Glues and Cleaners
We use low V.O.C. (volatile organic compound) glue, cleaner and primer on all PVC piping. We offer post consumer recycled content piping for all plumbing systems in the home, including copper and cast iron as alternatives to PVC pipe. PVC plastic is believed to be a known carcinogen throughout its useful life because of the dioxins released. Fortunately, we have alternative solutions.
In our Office
In our office we encourage the use of electronic invoices, estimates and any other documents to reduce the amount of paper used as often as possible. We use at least 40% post consumer recycled content copy and fax paper, letterhead, and envelopes. All of our paper, cardboard, plastic, cans and bottles are recycled through Curbie. We request that our vendors pack all goods in the least amount of packing possible to reduce waste.
In the Field
Any excess copper, brass, cast iron, lead, galvanized pipe, and other bi-metal products are recycled. All possible job-site materials are also recycled.
At Home
At home, PlumbSmart Technologies employees use HET (high efficiency technology) toilets and faucets. These items are EPA WaterSense rated. We also use restrictor shower heads and HET washers, dryers and appliances. Some of our employees have seen as much as a 40% reduction in their overall energy and water usage.
